Fed Up Documentary Review

Five-Second Summary: The documentary Fed Up,which was produced by filmmaker Stephanie Soechtig and journalist Katie Couric,is about the countless problems with the food industry in the United States. The documentary specifically attributes added sugar in foods to an array of sicknesses, specifically type 2 diabetes in children.

According to this documentary, added sugar is to be the culprit to the American obesity epidemic. I want to emphasize the added sugar part. Sugar from fruits are not hammered in this documentary. Sugar is added into pasta sauce, ketchup, salad dressing and an array of other foods.

Fed Up explains how sugar is hidden in almost every food, including health food. It claims, our bodies are not made to handle the amount of sugar that we currently it.

Best Things:

As an English and Composition professor, I loved the specificity of the documentary. Fed Up is not like other “food” documentaries that cover too many topics, but by the end you just find yourself a bit confused. It sticks to one culprit, sugar, and it really gets to the nitty gritty of the issue.

The documentary also interviews children who have problems with their sugar intake. Even following children who are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. We see what the children eat and it is not McDonalds and fried chicken. It really brings up the question how dangerous is sugar.

Meh Things:

The documentary runs a bit long and becomes receptive at points. I also wonder about placing so much accountability on outside sources.

My Thoughts:

Overall, Fed Up is very informative. It will make you look at you diet, but I don’t know if it make you change what you are eating.
